During the evening, it will recall the project “Bind to the Mountain” that Maria Lai, renowned international artist who recently passed away, moving from an old folk tale realized in 1981 in Ulassai, a small village in nestled at the foot of the mountains.

Blue ribbons, knotted one by one by the inhabitants, then tied together the houses of the village and the mountain above these, revealing the textures of social and human relations. In order to stress the deep ties that unite the institutions between them, and these to the city, Saturday, October 26, starting at 20.00, along Via della Stamperia, between Palazzo Carpegna, home of the National Academy of San Luca, and the Palace of the National Engraving, headquarters of the National Institute for Graphics, will be tied ribbons as a sign of respect and sharing of intentions.

This part of the city, and, in particular, the section of road adjacent to the Trevi Fountain, one night will be returned to give voice to that harmony of appearances, artistic, cultural and architectural attractions, making it an episode undoubtedly unique and precious.

Maria Lai, Gianni Polinas

In the pictures Maria Lai is recovered with some friends on the occasion of her 92nd birthday, some photos trace the genesis of his latest work, “Footprints of laws”, winner of the Chamber of Deputies Prize for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, from 2011 placed in the Hall of the Parliamentary Groups of Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome.

The title contains the meaning of work, “footprints” as traces of a path that comes from history to current opening to future advances. Pages of fabric with illegible writing made with wire, then sewn onto a canvas of 352 to 186 cm. The blacks sheets at the edges of the work, the tangles of wires, are reminiscent of the dark passages that led to the unification of Italy, maybe even the secret communications of the “Carbonari”, whose adepts aspire to political freedom and constitutional government as one of their symbols a ball to represent the spirit of solidarity among the members of the group. Then the pages, some crumpled, stained other, positioned without an apparent criterion, found an order, and are structured in a text, perhaps our Constitution.

In the work, however, there is a precise point of reference, as if it was unfinished and ever changing, the same colors of the flag are represented by simple green ribbons and red vacated. Here also only traces, just enough to put off the symbol, as to warn that it is no time for rhetoric space.

But in addition it is not right to push, because, as noted by Maria Sofia Pisu, grandson, but most important witness of the artist’s career: “Maria don’t like to explain, she leave the others to give meaning to his work, to read, with time , always new aspects. She followed in creating balance, rhythm of solids and voids, of lines and volumes. In her silent rooms seemed deep in games while mysterious aerials pick up what was happening around transforming the harmony in the message. While a window left open a gust of wind ruffling the pages of cloth on the canvas, starting again from that sign, finding it significant. When, in 1993, Maria worked at the “Escarpment”, the intervention of land art in the mountain of Ulassai, during night, elements of stone and steel that made it up, ready to be welded to the earth, had rolled to a sudden, breaking down the work. Maria had watched calmly the new provision by reading “the rhythm” that she looks for – the mountain has spoken! – She said, asking his colleagues to save the new order. ”

Maria said: “My role is to look for signs that still does not make sense, it is more like a game, but it has its risks. Playing with the wires, but my wires contain electricity, causing shock, burns, momentary illuminations “. Regarding the prizes for sure not one has ever sought doggedly, “artists should be respected”, she said categorically.
